Smart.vet is meant to function primarily as an after-hours/weekend service to support you, your pet, and your family veterinarian. We encourage you to contact your regular veterinarian during office hours as he/she is fully equipped to handle your particular pet’s needs (with access to your pet’s medical history and the ability to perform diagnostics (change from “dispense medication”, as we prescribe now), for example).
We are happy to help if/when your veterinarian is unable to accommodate you during the course of their regular day, and your pet requires care that cannot wait. Your veterinarian may recommend that you visit us instead, in which case we can act as an extension of their service by providing veterinary support virtually. When appropriate, we may prescribe medications for you to pick up, or schedule technician procedures for you with your regular clinic if we deem that they are recommended.
Veterinary emergency clinics are incredibly overburdened for a number of reasons. Wait time at some Ontario emergency clinics can at times exceed 36 hours for non-urgent cases, the end result being a lack of access to care for the pet. Our network of veterinarians works to triage pets who need care, determining who needs to be seen in person and who can be managed remotely through telemedicine alone.
This means that those patients that can be managed virtually are removed from the queue, shortening wait times. Those that need to be seen in person can be transferred by our veterinarian to an appropriate facility that can accommodate them. Our veterinarian will initiate the process on your behalf and ensure the seamless transfer of information to the attending hospital, then relaying next steps back to you, the pet owner.

After you sign-up, you will arrive on the dashboard. We’ve included two consultation types within the platform. If it’s less urgent, send us a message! You can attach images and videos of your pet’s symptom to help us.
If you’re sending us a message, tell us a little more about your pet and the issue. If you’re booking a phone call/video call, please select one of the available times shown!
Once you’ve completed the booking information, you will be directed to the consultation room. If you sent us a message, give our vets some time to respond, you will receive an email when the vet has responded. If you booked a video/phone call, the vet will call you at the scheduled time! If the time of the consult passes and you still haven’t heard from us please hang tight! It just means we’re busy but a vet will call you as soon as they can.
